From its origins as Georgia's first town, Savannah has grown in the past 271 years to become the essence of southern charm, grace and beauty. Her cobblestone streets, historic squares, magnificent architecture and ubiquitous live oaks draped with Spanish moss seduce the senses to a state of sated satisfaction.
Savannah Georgia has had her challenges over the years - British Redcoats, General Sherman and the boll weevil did not treat her kindly. The tide eventually turned. When the historic City Market was demolished, a preservation movement was born in the 1950s that created the Historic Savannah Foundation and the 2.5 square-mile Historic Landmark District, the largest in the U.S. The Savannah College of Art and Design, established in 1978, has renovated over 40 buildings in the Historic District.
And then came THE BOOK... John Berendt's best-seller of 1994, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and the subsequent movie, jostled the city from her sedate rhythm. Savannah is now on the itineraries of eager new visitors seeking an authentic bit of history seasoned with a dash of southern hospitality. They aren't disappointed.
